In September 2001, TalkingCock the Movie started looking for its cast. We had 3 days of auditions at The Substation, 2 days of auditions at the Changi-Simei Community Club, walked the streets of Singapore looking for suitable actors, and made many phone calls to our friends and family.
We ended up with 110 amazing actors and actresses whom you will see when the movie premieres on April 25th.
Here are some of the stories of our STARS!!! You might even work with or live in the same neighborhood as some of them!
TAN HSIEN WEI plays Mr Tan (irritating yuppie)
I work in the hospitality industry (not hospital aah!) but am now taking a break from it all to find the meaning of life (actually bumming around - got lobang, please let me know!). I spend my time catching up with friends, doing all kinds of sports, especially mountain biking and I am an avid appreciator of wine (got free wine tasting also please let me know!). I live in Clementi and my fav hawker stall is the sarabat stall at Blk 353 Clementi Ave 2. It is flanked by a great mee goreng stall on the left and a great prata stall on the right!!!
As for acting experience, I did some horsing around in junior college plays and a funny skit in the opening act of one of Selena Tan's stand up comedies. I also have guest performances on certain weekends in the dark alleyways of Desker Road (but you might not recognise me lah).
I thought acting in TalkingCock The Movie would be my break-through movie that would cast me into the realm of immense fame, fortune and beautiful women so that I could give up my guest performances in the dark alleyways of Desker Road... so I just went to the audition and 5 mins into telling the director about myself, she said, "OK, you can stop talking cock now. Thank you and we'll call you if we have a cock role for you". The rest is history.
In the movie I play this bad-attitude guy who insults an "auntie" and this auntie gets fed up, calls all her auntie members who gang up on me to make my day a living, tortuous hell. I really enjoyed screaming excruciatingly in the cubicle of a public toilet in the wet market in Tampines. My screams must've been quite realistic as there were many people gathered outside wondering who's bowels exploded in there...
Film work in the future ah, well, it all depends... I'm bumming around... Eh, got lobang or not?
MICHAEL TAN CHENG HAN plays Ah Long
Age:54
(Interview conducted and translated by Michael's daughter, Joy)
I was born in a Southern province of China. I came to Singapore when I was 11, could only speak my native dialect, Hainanese. Eventually learnt to speak Mandarin, Malay and now my ang moh is improving!
After I completed my secondary education, I was an army regular for three years, and became an anchor seaman in a merchant ship. I traveled vastly when I was young and got my tattoos done in Hong Kong.
I got married at 24 and I have three daughters now. I'm very faithful one …only one wife all the way. Currently working as a master in a small bunker barge.
I enjoy keeping birds and discus fish.. and it's my wish to keep a mini pinscher---aww... i love doggies! I like to watch movie productions by directors like Zhang Yi Mo and works by actors like Ke Jun Xiong…mostly based in china
I like all good food… like how I admire all beautiful 'things.'
In primary school, I did this Mandarin comedy… the 'ling zun, ling tang' one… that means, 'your father, your mother' or colloquially ' lin lao peh, lin lao bu'!
I got this role in the movie through my niece, Joyceln. I got talent spotted! I think she came to the right man!
In the movie, I play an ah-long trying to modernise his business. It was a novel experience. Very refreshing! Although memorizing the script was quite traumatic. It was great to work together with the cast and all the camera men /lighting people, everyone was fun!
The part where I was educating "my son" and Ah Tua about how to choose a pig's head was the funniest and my personal favorite.
As to whether I intend to do anymore film work, aiya, so old already… not much choice! However I would like to take up more challenging roles to test acting skills!
LILY TAN BEE YAN plays Heng Hor Yee (Ah Long's wife and formidable prawn mee hawker)
Age: mature
(Interview conducted and translated by Bee Yan's daughter, Joy)
I grew up in a kampung playing chatek, five stones, hide-and-seek, cycling…
Now I'm married as a housewife to Michael for close to thirty years, with three daughters all grown up.
I like char kuay teow, oyster omelette, fishball noodles with hiam jio zuei zuei! Plus pigs' trotters in vinegar!
I've never acted before so this has been a real experience for me.
I was asked by Joyceln to help in the production maybe because I'm her auntie. So I just joined in for fun, as well as the fact that I enjoy a good comedy. I didn't expect the small production to end up on the big screen!
I act as Ah-long's wife who has a stall of her own. I also gang up with other aunties to fight for righteousness. I found the entire production very exciting and fun. I enjoyed the whole time. I was nervous about reciting and memorising the script. Realised that acting is not as easy as it looks. Last time I watched tv, thought acting was a piece of cake... but was clearly wrong.
Now I'll just remain a housewife. But will definitely consider if other acting opportunities pop up, but I'm still nervous and shy about it.
JILLIAN LIM plays a Hoot U student
I'm trying to graduate from a world class institution (with as little effort and as much lying through my teeth as possible) and my ambition in life is to be a hobo...who has struck 4d....first prize...12 million dollar snowball...no other winners. Oh, but talking about hawker stalls, I must recommend the OLD AIRPORT RD HAWKER CENTRE, full of tasty goodies (orh luak, kwap chap, herbal soup, prawn mee etc)!
I have a bit of theatre experience. I was bored, boliao, therefore went for the TalkingCock audition, sang a spastic song and told dirty jokes...
I play a generic ah lian in Hoot U (another world crass institution!)
Fav moment: My only line! In a dialect i don't speak!
Funniest moment: When I looked at myself in a mirror after the hair and makeup artists were done with me...aiyo...
I have no plans on what to do after graduation in June....somebody emploooooy me! If it's amusing, I'll work for peanuts!
RANDALL LEE plays Randall (an uncool "cool" rocker)
My Name Is Randall Lee.... Coming To 20 Years Old This Year. Not doing anything currently...just doing my part for the country. I live in Singapore. Hahahaha! My favourite hawker stall used to be in Simpang Bedok..but it has sinced closed down. So I pretty much go to the Bedok market...the food there is fantastic at night.
I was in Temesek Polytechnic's Drama Club... This line is sort of for people like..Eric Lim, LN, Colin and Jeremy.
I went for the auditions for TalkingCock LAH! That's how I got the role.
I'm the Cheena Rocker...Channel 8..Wannabe Suria Rocker… HaAHahahahahaha
I enjoyed every F&#*&G MOMENT of acting in the movie! "Excuse Me."
The moment I hated most was when I was down with the flu... I'll tell you the funniest moment. It's when we were rehearsing and everyone was waiting for Silent Joe's Much anticipated line. Rock! Hahahaha!
I wanna go and study directing overseas...ANY SPONSORS?
I definitely want to do more film work Man! Actually It really depends..cause nobody has asked me to do any work...*QUOTES* "Its Hard Work… But I simply Just Love Doing It..."
TERRENCE KOH plays Khong Hai Koo ( Singapore's greatest poet)
I am a 'chinese helicoptor', so very poor in England writing, so pls pardon me. My height:1.80m, weight:80 kg. Urgly but kind. Like to help people and sensitive, and of-course always talk lot of COCK. Hard-working but dun know how to work smart, sometime I'm a bit 'gu gu' (blurr) also. Sometimes I do try my best to show people how capable I am, actually I know myself I'm not, a bit low self-esteem rite? 1 thing I always like to be proud is I have a happy family, a beautiful, nice wife and a little cute son. I always say that that I have them is more than everything in my life.
I'm a so-called "Art-Director" in a IT co. just a name only lah. I actually dun perform that job much. I'm staying at Woodlands, 4 room flat. If u wish to come then I will give u full address. I love mee-soup of a stall at Toa-Payoh.
How I come to this movie huh????? Errrr. pai-say to say lah.... I actually fond of a good old-time friend..... I like her long long time ago....so that a chance for me to see her again (forget abt my wife temperaly).... so I come lor... dun care doing wat... then I realize myself I never act-before, in BIG movie some more.
I played a drunken called KONG HAI GU. well.... that role does fit me.. but my hair seen too neat. my favorite moment is 'she' praise and SAYANG me once I act good to her... hee hee.....
Now I'm taking a course of internetworking... a serious 1.... if not... feel unsecure lah...
As for other films, if 'she' called me to help her again.... I sure I help 1..... until now I can say that....
Mohd Faizal bin Mat ISA plays Faizal (an uncool "cool" rocker)
Well, my name is Mohamad "Botak" Faizal. U wanna noe my vital stats? Height is 180cm and weight, I think it's 65 kg? Hmm...not sure lah. I am currently staying in Taman Jurong, Singapore. Also, I'm waiting for my NS enlistment day (2nd april 2002!): Damn! I'm gonna miss the premiere...rite? As for hobbies, i guess i play the guitar, surf the net, play LAN games, and a variety of sports (soccer, basketball, sepaktakraw...) Oh yah, i'm also unemployed, but had periods of relief teaching before. Hawker stall...i guess it's gotta be Taman Jurong S-11 cos it's very near my place, cheap, powerful, comfy and the food is/are delicious. Haha, but i always buy mee goreng and roti prata from te indian muslim stall only...so does it count as fav.?
I don't think i've done any kind of acting before the movie (i can't realli remember my school days!) but performing got ah: teachers' day, talentime, etc...usually dance/vocal solo/band.
Basically, i was the luckiest one among Naked Lunch (my band). They had to go for audition (one minute of talk cock izzit?) and also interviews, etc...but i got a part of the movie after a jamming session whereby Colin and Joyce "organised" so that they can hear us. The rest is history...Ask Silent Joe for more details.
In the movie, I'm a lead-singer of a hardcore band, Project Diarrhoea...who eventually became a boyband!!
Very good experience indeed...the cast and esp. the crew made acting so fun and engaging (cos u all allow us to actually give suggestions)
Fav. moment: Recording for its soundtrack!
Most hated moment: at one period of time, i had disgusting and uncomfortable bumps on the soles of my feet and at the same time, i was not feeling well (we were recording the void-deck-chasing-of-Rauzan scene)
Funniest moment: Randall's fever. Considering he won the Parallel Universe Award, it's funny to think that he's actually HUMAN!
As for other movies, well, i'm looking forward to Talking Cock-the return/ Talking Cock-the revenge of Alor Setar, hehehe...next is of course Army in pulau tekong. Dat's all...thanks for everything guys...i realli appreciate it.
TAN CHONG KEE plays Eng Siong (handsome customer at a bao shop)
Born in 1962. Trained as an academic, was active in civil society for many years until the web site I founded, Sintercom, had to close down due to its inability to comply with SBA regulations. Now serving in the Remaking Singapore Committee to see if it is possible to remove the many road blocks that prevent Singaporeans from meaningfully participating in public affairs. Live in the East Coast. Any stall that sell a big bowl of Longtong for $2 would be my favourite hawker stall.
When I was 6, I was on local children TV shows.
As for the movie, I found out because Colin and Joyce told me it would be fun... and it was!
I play Eng Xiong (or something like that) -- a guy who was almost killed by his secret admirer's way of expressing her love for him.
Favourite moment: pretending to be a Chinese peasant. Hated moment: none -- I had great fun, wished I had more scenes even! Funniest moment: Hey, making a comedy is serious work!
(Will you be doing any more film work?)
Yes please! When's your next film?
LING WEI MING plays a Hoot U student (Ah Beng extraordinaire)
name: ling wei ming personality:egoistic. Anti-national service. scant respect for authority. motto in life: i do whatever i want n' if the world ain't down with it, fuc* the world. live in the north of s'pore. currently working in fn'b line. fav hawker stall:hang hee stall(bbq fish)
Have I done acting? definitely! everyday as well..... you see i always have to act the role of a good employee in front of my boss everyday at work even if i'm not 1....
(How did you come to star in the movie?)
By sheer curiosity n fabulous "cocking"
I was an extra in the movie. it wasn't all that bad though...it was more like playing than work...n you get paid for it! Favourite moment...when i saw the pretty actresses. no particular moment that i dislike
next in store...music. As for film work, it depends on whether i get another chance n' also what role i get as well......i dun wanna be an extra all the time you know.....it's not very good for the ego.
JEANETTE ONG plays Bollywood Dancer number 1
I am currently a first year communication studies student at NTU, and also a national triathlete. I call tanah merah home, but right now i stay in NTU cos i'd rather take 2 minutes to go to school than 2 hours! My favorite hawker stall... i love yong tau foo, and i think the one at windmill at holland village (an upclass hawker center!) is really really good. Also the yong tau foo at the coffee shop next to siglap center is damn yummy too!
Well I had a small part in growing up.. and i got to the semis of "the next big thing". Also i write my own songs and play the guitar... and i performed at my secondary school's prom night and i became prom queen!
(How did you come to star in the movie?)
That's a good question.. maybe i look bollywoodish (cos i was a bollywood dancer!) harharhahr. Well saw the audition notice in the arts community egroup i think.. so i went!
I was a bollywood dancer! My favorite moment.. the cheesy grins and exxagerated movements. Oh yes also the make up.. i supposedly looked like lucy liu!!! Hm i didn't hate anything much actually! Ok ok maybe the hot pink top was a beeeeet too bright! The funniest moment is probably our whole scene. It's hilarious and i think it's gonna make loads of people laugh like hell.
I really really hope to do more film work. Will be having a shoot next week, it's for an anti drug video. I also recorded some of my songs last week and i hope i get somewhere with them!
Hey to all at talkingcock thanks for making my first movie experience a great one!!
