AN ODE TO SPEAKERS CORNER

Hello listeners, my good friends
I’ve come to speak with you again
Over here in little Hong Lim Green
You know it’s really quite a quiet scene
Speakers Corner, though you’ve been here for 3 years
All one hears
Is the sound of silence
Off to the police post I go
I have to go there even though
Speech in our tiny little count-ter-ry
Our constitution says it should be free
But I still have to hand in my I.C.
Woe is me
To make the sounds of silence
And in the Corner I’m alone
Not allowed a microphone
People talking with no one listening
Except the ISD eavesdropping
People speaking, but no one is allowed to hear
What’s said here
Except the sound of silence
It’s no wonder no one speaks
It’s all due to politics
They say you can come here to speak your mind
But tell your friends to come and you’ll be fined
What’s the point if you know you’ll just kena saman
Like Chee Soon Juan
Better stick to silence
And that is why we emigrate
‘Cause here we can’t communicate
But we know to this they’re indifferent
They’ll just replace us with foreign talent
And even though they said they would loosen up their grip
Their censorship
Prolongs the sound of silence
